Info. For New Students

Message from the President

Assalam O Alaikum,

On behalf of the Pakistani Students Alliance, let me welcome you all to Virginia Tech.

PakSA is a student-run social organization formed to represent and cater to the needs of Pakistani Students studying at Virginia Tech. Over the years, PakSA has played a significant role creating an awareness of the culture of Pakistan amongst the community of Blacksburg through PakSA’s cultural shows, ghazal concerts, and its participation in International Week.

But things don’t stop there. From our potlucks and trips to the New River to cleaning chicken for the luncheons and giving late-night tours of campus, PakSA is full of fun and excitement.

Some of our regular activities include BBQ’s, EID Dinners, and cricket tournaments. Come April and you have “International Week” – a week long event of cultural shows, dances, plays, int’l food and much more.

We sincerely hope that the new students coming to VT get involved in such events and be a part of what has become a wonderful tradition here.

From airport pickups to temporary housing to finding an on-campus job, PakSA has always been there to help our fellow countrymen make the best of their campus life.

First Things First

·         Cranwell International Center. All new international students must report to Cranwell’s Welcome Center the day after they arrive in Blacksburg with their immigration documents.  You will receive VITAL information about orientation events and activities and all the things you need to do.

·      Attend Orientation Sessions. This is very important.  Get the full schedule of events at the Cranwell Center Welcome Center.

·         Registration – Find out whom to contact at your department when you come to the Cranwell Center.  Some departments have group advising sessions that are listed in the orientation brochure you’ll receive when you come to Cranwell.

Housing Information

Most international students at VT live in apartments off-campus. However, it is obligatory for incoming freshmen to stay on-campus their first year at VT. Depending on how close the apartment is to campus, and how many people share an apartment, rent can be anywhere from $200 to $350 per month (per person). Add utilities, phone and groceries, and it comes to around $350 to $500 per month (per person). If you decide to live a little away from campus to save some bucks, there is a bus system that operates around campus so you never have to really worry about getting to campus from home. However, living a little away from campus may not be for you if you plan to be at the campus library studying late nights or if you plan to get involved in social activities.

Virginia Tech on-campus housing and dining plan information can be accessed via the VT homepage. For off-campus housing, please visit our Off-Campus Housing website. Also, you can always find something in the classifieds of the Collegiate Times, VT's very own newspaper.

Groceries,food,etc

As far as eating is concerned, students on-campus generally eat in the dining halls. Hardly will you ever get time to cook on-campus. But for those of you off-campus and wanting to cook at home, there are grocery stores, most popular being the OASIS World Market located in South Main St. which you can get to by taking South Main bus. These will have everything you need. If you want Halal meat, it is available, but it is not very near to campus. So you may need to hitch a ride from a friend who owns a car or you may have to take the bus. Depending on how much you cook and how much you eat out, food costs about $100-$200 a month. You can find Halal Meat at:

OASIS World Market

On-Campus Job Information

Most international students who could use some extra cash here work on-campus. That is the only way one can work 20 hours a week in a student friendly environment. It is most convenient too. However, it is wise to settle in during your first semester and get used to life here before you start working. You would be surprised how fast paced life can get here at VT.

The real treasures of PakSA are its members, which have been the building blocks of the organization over the years.

It is them who lay the foundations of success through their participation in events and other activities in the university.

We hope that thin information helps you get settled in at VT. For more information about PakSA, please email paksa@vt.edu

Remember that university life is not just about hitting the books 24/7; it is unique and enriching experience. A lot of times, you will face problems, sometimes financial and sometimes academic and if you’re lucky, you won’t face any problems (that’s not too probable though ;).

But no matter what the case, never lose sight of what you are here for. Make the best of everything and you will see that hard work and your faith in Allah will always go a long way. With these words, I hope to inspire you in the same manner I was inspired when I first arrived here. With best wishes and lots of luck to you all.

Sincerely,

President, and the committee of PakSA
